Vacation, Day 3

DSCN7153
Today was all about two things:
The Santa Monica Pier & The Hollywood Sign.
We finally made it to the pier after trudging through the ridiculous
traffic between San Diego & LA.
The good news and the bad news was that all of the close parking was taken.
So…we had to park WAY too far away & walk down.
But like I said, that was the good news too,
because we got to take in the GORGEOUS views!

I was surprised how far ahead Emma was walking,
because normally she isn’t more than two inches from my side.
She’s definitely my little hand holder.

DSCN7168 Maddie got a little freaked out by how high up we were for a minute,
but overall loved the views.

Amelia on the other hand?
HA!
These three shots sum up her feelings….

After we left the beach,
we started making our way towards the Hollywood Sign.
We winded our way up itty bitty little streets (read: West Virginia on crack)
and finally made our way to the top!

It’s hard to tell from this picture just how close we were,
but we felt like we could reach up & touch it!
We were all the way at the top of the hill & it was right above the rooftops.
After we found our way back to the bottom of the hill,
we started making our way back to San Diego.
Quick dinner at Denny’s & then to bed.
It was a great day.

Vacation, Day 2

DSCN7028
Hoping that a better day lay ahead of us than yesterday.
So far, so good…. It’s a beautiful day.

Emma loved the Sea Lions.
She especially loved the one below that liked to “strike a pose.”
He would take a break to look at you, then go right back into position.

Then it was on to Shamu.
It was a little sad that the show has had to change so much
since the tragic events of a few months ago, but understandable.
I so wanted the girls to see the kind of shamu show I grew up with…
where the trainer would come shooting up out of the water standing on Shamu’s fins,
or where the trainer would put his feet against Shamu’s nose & would be pushed through the water like a bullet
and then shoot up out of the water like a rocket.
But there was none of that this time.  The trainers weren’t allowed in the water at all.

Snack time!

Then souvenir time!
Emma loves her new Shamu t-shirt & her whale’s tail necklace.

Gorgeous view while waiting for the girls to appear on the rapids….

There they are!  On the far side of the raft!

And then they were soaking wet & freezing!
DSCN7092
Interacting with the marine life was easy for Maddie since she loves that kind of thing.
But Emma has always been skiddish about this kind of stuff.
With a little (a lot) of encouragement, she finally picked up a starfish AND petted the stingrays.
I was so proud of her!

Even though Maddie might be brave with the starfish,
she wasn’t so brave with this shark tube!
She went through it, but she was a big chicken the whole way!
I thought it was really cool.

One of their favorite rides.
DSCN7139The other ride that Emma couldn’t go without riding!
HA!  We thought that was so funny!
But I love that she’s growing up but still wants to ride the little kid elmo ride.
She’s still my baby!
DSCN7140  When Sea World closed,
we decided to go find a beach that would give us a better experience.
And boy did we find one!
We drove up to Encinitas & I LOVED it there.
It was beautiful & with all the little beach cottages and stuff…it was great.
I wouldn’t mind living there honestly.
We watched the sunset for a little while, then got back in the car
because it was actually pretty cold.

Vacation 2010 Day: 1

IMAG0136

Packed & ready to go, just waiting for the girls to get done in Starbucks.

DSCN6992

We plugged in “Maggie” (our GPS) and off we went!  The weather was decent when we left, but the closer we got to San Diego, the colder and rainier it got.  At one point it was down in the 30’s and even SNOWING!

As we continued off of the mountains & toward the ocean, it stayed chilly and rainy,

but it did warm up some.

Still, we had a rough start with San Diego.

None of us were very impressed with it at all.

People who know me know what I think about West Virginia & the hills & curves that are there.

Well, this looked to me like West Virginia with palm trees.

I felt so claustrophobic with everything so close together and piled on top of each other.

We went to the beach, but the weather had been bad & the waves were still

pretty out of control.

We decided to head back to the hotel & call it a night, hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Thankfully, our room was decent! :)
